UTEP won the area it was supposed to, special teams, as a recovery of a Tennessee muff counted as the biggest play in the kicking game.
Notably, punter Mitchell Crawford's 12 punts tied for sixth most in a game in school history, and while his first boot went only 19 yards, he recovered nicely and had a 39.2-yard average with three punts downed inside the 20.
Most importantly, UTEP continued a great run of not allowing punt or kickoff returns. Of Crawford's 12 punts, Tennessee had three returns for 5 yards. For the season, UTEP has punted 20 times and given up four returns for 7 yards.
